Clearviction.org
Website Redesign
Overview:
In collaboration with our Product Manager team and other designers, I led the redesign of Clearvictions’s Landing page.
Clearviction (formerly Conviction Vacation Project) is a non-profit organization with the goal of improving the lives and reentry process for those in Washington State with Convictions.
For this project, I collaborated with Product Managers and Designers to develop the Requirements, created sketches and high-fidelity mock ups, led research through usability testing, and implemented changes based on insights from our research.
Business Goals:
In preparation for the release of the misdemeanor eligibility calculator, we needed to:
Create a simple and concise landing page
Provide summary information of the process
Increate engagement with the eligibility calculator
The Problem:
Formerly incarcerated people in Washington State don’t have a clear and easy way to access the eligibility calculator in order to begin the conviction vacation process.
Many formerly incarcerated people in Washington State don’t know that they can petition to clear their record. If they do know this is an option, they don’t know if they are eligible to petition, let alone how to. To address this, Clearviction created a calculator for users to input their unique information and find out if they are eligible.
Now, we need to design a place for these users to go where they can easily access the calculator, learn more about the process of vacation, and find resources.
The Solution:
To drive users to the calculator, we redesigned an informative landing page.
Before beginning the process of using the eligibility calculator, users may want to know more information about the process, and about the calculator. Thus a simple and concise landing page is needed.
Process:
Requirements
In collaboration with the Product team, I developed a list of requirements with a focus on the audience, business goal, and possible barriers to use for our users.
Audience
Primary: People formerly incarcerated in WA State
Secondary: Those interested in learning more about or becoming involved with CVP
Possible Barriers to Use
Users may be concerned that there is a cost to use the calculator
Users don’t know about conviction vacation and why it might be helpful to them
Users may think that the calculator can clear their conviction / submit the petition now
Users may worry that the eligibility calculator is too complicated or long
Users don’t know what information they’ll need to have ready
Users may be concerned putting their personal information into a website in case it may be misused or shared
Sketches
Gurveen and I sketched 2-3 options each for the landing page before choosing the two that best aligned with the requirements. We presented these two choices to the Product Team, and began drafting mock ups. Of the three sketches I created, we chose the one with the green outline below in addition to one of Gurveen’s sketches.
Mock-Ups
With help from a design student (Michelle) during a Hackathon, Gurveen and I drafted mid-fidelity mock ups of the two chosen sketches. These would be used to conduct Guerilla Testing to make a user informed decision for the design of our landing page.
Test & Iterate
The next step is testing these two designs to learn how potential users expect to interact with their components. I will be conducting testing with at least 5 potential users via both Zoom and in-person meetings. From there, I’ll compile insights and form recommendations for how to move forward to present and discuss with the rest of the team.
